*BARING-GOULD, S., M.A., /A BOOK OF GHOSTS/.* Bound in original red
cloth elaborately lettered in gilt. Methuen & Co., London, 1904. 1st
edition, 8vo, pp. 383, 40 [ads].
Sabine Baring-Gould (1834-1924) was an English divine, hagiographer and
author of many works on travel, folklore, and the
macabre (his bibliography lists over 500 titles). He also wrote the
words for the famous hymn "Onward Christian Soldiers". This title, a
collection of 21 ghost stories, is almost as famous as his seminal work
on lycanthropy, "The Book of Werewolves", but it is much harder to find
in a first edition. Our copy is a true first, in the original cloth
binding, and with Methuen's 40-page catalogue at the end, dated
September, 1904. It is bumped at the corners and shows slight wear to
the extremities. There is some very light overall soiling to the cloth,
but the elaborate gilt title (blocked to the front board) is unmarred
and bright. The foredges of the text block are spotted, and there are
occasional outbreaks of foxing to the contents (more so to the
preliminaries). All of the eight full-page illustrations by D. Murray
Smith are present and in very good condition. There is a former owner's
bookplate on the front pastedown, but no other former owner's markings.
The binding is a bit dry, and "crackling" when opened, but nothing is
loose and the endpapers and hinges are tight. A good plus copy of a very
scarce title.
Price: $500.00.
