*MIRRLEES, Hope. /LUD-IN-THE-MIST/*. Bound in original green half cloth
with patterned paper over boards. Alfred A. Knopf, New York City, 1927.
Small 8vo, pp. 313. First American edition.

Helen Hope Mirrlees (1887-1978) was a British poet, novelist, and
translator (she spoke six languages by her mid-20s), and friend of
Virginia Woolf. Her best known work is "Lud-in-the-Mist", which was
first published by W. Collins Sons in London, in 1926 (See Bleiler, "The
Check-List of Science-Fiction and Supernatural Fiction"). It "...is a
unique fantasy novel, slow moving and exquisitely written, fairly short,
and very much unlike the typical Tolkien rehashes of today" (George T.
Dodds, SF
Site Reviews). This is the first American edition. This title has been
re-published numerous times, starting with a mass-market paperback in
1970, and is now available in the abhorrent POD (print-on-demand) format
(the book equivalent to a TV dinner). Our copy shows rubbing to the
edges of the boards. The paper title label, affixed to the spine, is
slightly pulled away, but not torn. The half-cloth spine, and the
boards, are lightly soiled. The "Borzoi"-design endpapers are clean and
tight, although the binding feels very slightly sprung. The contents are
clean and bright. Overall, in good, to good plus, condition. No dust jacket.

Price: $500.00.

Terms of sale - The price is in USD, and the book is offered subject to
