Report upon the Colorado River of the West, explored in 1857 and 1858 by
Lieutenant Joseph C. Ives, Corps of Topographical Engineers
Published by the Government Printing Office: 1861.
This Senate issue copy of Report upon the Colorado River of the West
is
a truly spectacular example of a nineteenth century expedition report. The
first study of the Colorado River and one of the most desirable books
about the river, its canyons and its exploration, this oversize volume
includes two extraordinary 35"x16" fold-out maps of the Colorado River, as
prepared by "Baron" Egloffstein, who pioneered a unique engraving process
to achieve a superb rendering of topographical features. Also included are
7 chromolithograph Indian Portraits, 17 lithographs, 8 fold-out
panoramas and 68 black & white wood-cuts.
