The publishing firm specialized in law and theology books of sorts;
the University of the Pacific has a 1867 E.B. Myers and Chandler book
inscribed by Ralph Waldo Emerson to John Muir. The first book from
Myers and Chandler appeared in 1858; it was over after 1868 and 54
titles [ = 54 entries in OCLC, but not this book]; the Chicago Fire
was on October 9, 1871, but apparently the firm had already ended,
for no publications from it are recorded in OCLC for 1869 or 1870.
As it happens, Myers and Chandler published books of Swedenborgian
interest, indirectly accounting, probably, for the presence of our
book in the Library of the Swedenborgian Church of San Francisco
[noted California Arts and Crafts building designed by Bernard
Maybeck, with two stained glass windows by Bruce Porter], a portion
of which we have just acquired (and re-sold, retaining only this one
book). Every other book gave inherit evidence of ownership by the
Church, not in itself an unhappy feature. But this book remained unmarked.
Scarce, not in OCLC, or at Harvard, Yale, LC, or in the UC
system. The Newberry Library reports only the 1885 edition of
Paine. Strangely, the University of Chicago on-line catalogue
records no holdings at all for Timothy Otis Paine. The Jewish
Theological Seminary [searched via Aleph] has only the 1885 and 1886
editions. The Jewish National and University Library in Jerusalem
has only the London edition from Sampson Low, Marston, Searle &
Rivington, 1886.
A superb copy in the original binding.
