[Dazes, abbe]. L’ESPRIT DES MAGISTRATS PHILOSOPHES ou Lettres Ultramontaines d
’un Docteur de la Sapience a la Faculte de Droit de l’Universite de Paris.
Tivoli: Chez l’Auteur. 1765. First edition. 512pp. Index. Cont. green vellum,
lower spine rather chipped, some wear to extremities. A.e.g. A very clean,
crisp copy. $400.00 (trade discount allowed)
The very rare first edition, printed in Tivoli and distributed by the author,
L’abbe d’Azais (known as Dazes). In this work Dazes (d. 1766) writes
favorably on the doctrine of the Jesuits whose society had been dissolved in France
the previous year. In particular, he is violently critical of the works of
Voltaire, “le plus obscene du plus impie des Poetes, dont les libertins et les
philosophes prunent a l’envi la turpitude et l’irreligion,” and also denounces
the judiciary.
