...so argues Mark Perry in "Grant and Twain," and we won't disagree. We are
pleased to offer:
~
(No. 9236 ) Grant, U[lysses]. S[impson]. (1822-1885). PERSONAL MEMOIRS OF
U. S. GRANT, IN TWO VOLUMES.
New York: Charles L. Webster & Company, 1885-1886. First printings, Original
cloth, Octavos, 584 & 647 pages, Black & white engraved plates, maps,
facsimiles. Very Good.
The greatest American military memoir, written by the financially
ruined Grant in a race against death, and published with the savvy
assistance of Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain). The work is written with the same
calm, clarity, and force that characterized Grant's orders. Luckily for us
and for his family, Grant finished just 4 days before he died in July, 1885.
Volume I was then published in December of 1885, and at the end of February,
1886 Clemens was able to present Grant's widow, Julia, with the largest
publishing royalty in U.S. history to that time--$200,000. Clemens declared
it a literary masterpiece, and most subsequent critics concur. DORNBUSCH,
Vol. II, #1986; EICHER #492; MULLINS, UNION BOOKSHELF #35; NEVINS, CWB Vol.
II, p. 59. Errata printed at end of volume II. Bound in dark green cloth
over boards with spines lettered in gilt, decorated in black and gilt, upper
boards titled in gilt with gilt medallions, decorated endpapers,
tissue-guarded frontispieces. Bindings show some spotting, particularly
upper board of volume I. There are minor extremity rubs to both volumes and
a touch of rubbing to medallion on upper board of volume I. Interiors are
exceptionally clean and sound with solid bindings, no cracked endpapers or
hinges, and just a bit of minor foxing to frontispiece in volume II.
