"The beautiful is not a kind of truth, but a kind of good" and a book of
engravings is a book containing a certain kind of goods. (Gill, from his
Preface).

[Arthur] Eric [Rowton] Gill (1882-1940) was a British stone-carver,
engraver, typographer and author. He studied lettering under Edward
Johnston, as well as architecture and masonry. In 1906, he married, and
the following year he moved with his family to "Sopers", a house in the
village of Ditchling, in Sussex, which would later become the centre of
an artists' community inspired by Gill. There he started producing
sculpture - his first public success was /Mother and Child/ (1912). His
first figures were carved directly from stone. He converted to Roman
Catholicism in 1913, and carved the Stations of the Cross for
Westminster Cathedral (1913-1918), as well as a number of other large
outdoor works (e.g. the London Transport head office, where one of his
colleagues was Henry Moore). He designed ten type fonts including
"Perpetua", "Gill Sans-serif", and "Joanna" (named after his daughter).
His designs often have a classical Roman, or religious, influence. After
his death, his headstone, on his grave near Pigotts, identified him
simply as a "stone carver"

This magnificent work was published in a limited edition of 490 copies,
this copy being designated no. 417 and was printed at the Fanfare Press,
London, for Douglas Cleverdon. With 103 full page (13" x 9 1/2") plates
from Gill's wood and steel engravings. The boards are a bit scuffed,
with a touch of soiling. The gilt embossed image of a tree with a blade
through its trunk, is bright and unmarred. There are no former owner's
names, or other markings: the text and plates are clean and tight.
