For your consideration:
History of the Late War In Ireland, with and Account of the United Irish
Association; from the first Meeting at Belfast, to the Landing of the
French
at Kilala, by John Burk; Francis and Robert Bailey, Philadelphia, 1799,
    First Edition
In May and September of 1798 of the late 18th Century Ireland attempted
a
rebellion against British oppression. At least 30,000 people were
killed.
Led by the United Irish Association, which was formed in Belfast and
Dublin
in 1791 by Theobald Wolfe Tone. Initially founded to force British
Parliament for reform and equal religious rights. It was comprised of
merchants, and professionals, both Protestant and Catholics. Later to
become
a militant Republican anti-English group. The rebellion was spurred by
the
French Revolution and America's fight for freedom from the British. When
1,000 French soldiers under General Humbert landed at Kilala and joined
up
with 1,000 (+) Irish rebels, they had a short lived victory called the
Battle of Castlebar. The British reinforcements and artillery eventually
overwhelmed the Irish and French. Unfortunately this bloody rebellion
only
led to tighter controls by the British, and the 1801 Act of the Union.
