A facsimile of a rare pamphlet issued in Boston in 1743, reprinted from an 
original in the library of Thea Heye, wife of the founder of the Museum of 
the American Indian. It contains the Rev. John Sergeant's plan for 
educating Indian children to be civil and industrious by establishing 
boarding schools where they will be taught English. This is followed by Dr. 
Colman's Reply, in which he includes an account of work already done by the 
Rev. Isaac Hollis with the Stockbridge Indians, a branch of the Algonquian 
tribe.

The Rev. Sergeant, a Yale divinity graduate, was sent to minister to the 
Housatonic Indians in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, in 1735. Benjamin 
Colman was the minister of the famous Brattle Street Church in Boston. 
Interestingly, both Sergeant and Colman emphasize the importance of 
teaching young Indian girls as well as boys. An important document, scarce 
in any edition.

issued; printed on deckle-edged Roma paper; light soil; parchment on spine 
split along the crease and reglued with very slight loss; some cover soil.
