of FDR and Teddy Roosevelt books.

[CLEVELAND, Grover] SHAKESPEARE, William. THE WORKS OF WILLIAM
SHAKESPEARE. LIFE, GLOSSARY, ETC. London: Frederick Warne and Co.
n.d. [@1870]. Recently bound in full polished calf with a
gilt-decorated border and spine and marbled endpapers. GROVER
CLEVELAND'S COPY of a popular edition of Shakespeare with a superb
full page SIGNED INSCRIPTION on the original front endpaper: "This
book belonged to my/friend Edgar K. Apgar/who died in the city
of/Albany in the month of/August 1885. After his death/this volume
was sent to me/by his brother G. W. Apgar/as a memento of one of
the/truest and best friends I/ever had./Grover Cleveland/October 1,
1885." SIGNED by the President only seven months after assuming
office. Apgar served as Treasurer of the State of New York. He
appears to have been, as Cleveland's inscription indicates, a
longtime friend of the President's. According to a letter housed at
Cornell University Library from William H. Jessup to Clarence L.
Houghton, an Ithaca, NY, newspaperman, Apgar played an early role in
recognizing the political potentialities of Cleveland. This book was
acquired from the estate of Cleveland's grandson. The initials "G.C."
in pencil in an unknown hand are at the top of the endpaper. Foxing
to the endpapers but with little detrimental effect on the
inscription. Contents Near Fine in Fine, handsome binding. Remarkable
copy! $5000.00
