Land of the Lamas Notes of a Journey Through China Mongolia and Tibet,
Rockhill, William Woodville, The Century Company, N.Y., 1891, First Edition:
Containing Rockhill's journey of several thousand miles through the (then)
Chinese Empire, gathering facts of the country, historical, geographical,
and ethnographical. He spent four years in Peking (Beijing), where he
interviewed and gathered information from the natives of various parts of
Tibet and the border-land of Kan-su. Frontispiece, 60 illustrations, two
maps. In addition to the contents of his journey are, "Supplementary Notes
and Tables," which include: Foreign Tribes of Kan-su; Origin of the Prayer,
"Om Mani Padme' Hum"; Early Ethnography of the  Koko-nor and Eastern Tibet;
Divination by Shoulder-Blades. Scapulamancy or Omoplatoscopy; Political
Geography of Eastern Tibet; Origin of the Tibetan People, As Told in the
"Mani Kambum," Chapter XXXIV; Notes on the Language of Eastern Tibet;
Itinerary and Barometric Observations. William Woodville Rockhill,
Philadelphia, Pa., (1854-1914): was an American scholar-diplomat; he was an
authority on Tibet and Buddhism, linguist, ethnologist and the first
Westerner  to befriend and advise the thirteenth Dalai Lama. Rockhill also
was the first American to speak, read and write Tibetan, and the first to
explore the Tibetan highlands, where he traveled extensively. He was the
U.S. Minister to Greece, Romania, Serbia, China, Russia, and Turkey. His
extensive collection of Tibetan manuscripts, including works of this book,
became the core of the Library of Congress's Tibetan holdings. Tan/light
brown blind stamped publishers cloth, brown leather title panel to spine,
with gilt lettering, and gilt decoration. Mild rubbing of extremities, few
pale stains to boards, 3 inch closed tear to rear joint, with a 2 inch
section of the edge dry and tender. Spine ends bumped and rubbed, head chip
to edge near rear, few small chips to spine title panel. Quire mid book is
loosening. Mild toning of text, few leaf edges are dry with tiny chips. Page
70 small stain to lower margin. Previous owners name to pastedown. Text and
illustrations clean, all illustrations and maps present, tight in covers.
TEG. An excellent authoritative work. tall 8 vo., 399 pp. Please read
description carefully. This is a sound very good copy with stated defects.

Papers Relating to Tibet. Presented to both Houses of Parliament by Command
of His Majesty, Darling & Son, Ltd., London, 1910, First Edition: A
fascinating government study and early look at the politics through
correspondence between the British, Indian and Chinese Governments over
Tibet; at a time when it became a political pawn between the British,
Imperial Russia, and China. Reflecting the political skillfulness and
intelligence of the 13th Dali Lama. This volume contains British Government
publications on papers relating to Tibetan Frontier, published 1904 to 1910.
Contents of letters, dispatches, enclosures, telegrams, political and
Mission Diaries, etc., from 1890 forward, from Government officials of
England, India and China,  regarding the Missions, Trade, negotiations,
Chinese Government, 13th Dali Lama Thubten Gyatso, Tibetan people, Sikkim
Frontier, battles of the Tibetan people, Appointments, etc. Large fold-out
map, "Sketch Map Showing Routes Between Tibet and India". Each years
compilations has a Table of Contents listing: No., Document, Date, From, To,
Subject, Page. Index to rear. An excellent scholarly and historic document
of events during this period and their affects on Tibet. Brown cloth boards
and spine, gilt title and Foreign Office seal to spine. Ex-library, gilt
lettering to lower spine, square blue 1 1/2 by 1 1/2 illustrated library
pastedown to upper right corner, dated 1888. Pg. XVII Table of Contents,
mild brown edge stain; pg. II, 1 1/2 closed edge tear; pg. 49 (supplement)
No. 118 has library stamp across text; however text is still very readable.
Closed upper edge tear, corner chipped to continuation of 1904, title page,
few other small closed edge tears. Tissue guard after e.p. creased with 1
1/12 inch closed tear near lower gutter. Hinge reinforced, upper 5 inches
cracked. Half inch closed cloth tear to rear joint, 2 1/2 to upper front
joint. Brown e.p.'s, rear pastedown small library packet and numbers.  Mild
soiling of boards. Blue title page of 1904 contents has Sale of Government
Publications to verso.  Large Heavy volume. 12 3/4 by 8 1/4. Over 800 pages.

literature for children illustrated by Jessie Wilcox Smith. Five beautiful
glossy color plates (including frontispiece); children experiencing each of
the "five senses". Organized into five sections which contain stories,
poetry and vignettes about each of the senses; by many well known writers:
Elf and Doormouse, Oliver Herford; Fortune's Feather, Hans Christian
Anderson; A Chill, Christinia G. Rossetti; The Fragrant Tulip Bed, Angela M.
Keys; The Herb Shop, A.M. Keys; The Dragon Fly, Charles Kingsley; The Lost

the First, by Bartlett, W.H.; Arthur Hall, Virtue & Co., London, 185, First
Edition: The history of our American Forefathers as they flee their homeland
of England due to the religious intolerance during the reign of James the
First (1603 - 1625 AD). Detailing their  origins and lives in England,
religious leaders and beliefs, their suffering and persecution in England
and escape to Holland. The conditions in Holland during their exile and
finally their emigration on the Mayflower to the New World, and the
hardships of settlement. Also providing Pilgrim character, localities,
leadership, etc. Bartlett's sources were gathered from many early
publications connected to different localities, along with penned memorials;
however his chief source are the original chronicles of the Pilgrims,
collected by Mr. Young, of Boston, Old Colony records, researches of Mr.
