[NAST, Thomas]. HARPER'S BAZAR: A REPOSITORY OF FASHION, PLEASURE,
AND INSTRUCTION. Volume IV. New York: Harper & Brothers 1871. Folio
(11" x 15-1/2") bound in contemporary half black leather with leather
corners and gilt rules and lettering. Includes issues beginning 7
January 1871 to 30 December 1871; iv, 848 pages. Illustrated with
numerous wood engravings with five by Thomas Nast, among them a
two-page spread of "Old Mother Goose's Melodies" and one of his
finest depictions of Santa Claus on the cover of the last
issue--"Santa Claus's Rebuke. 'I'll Never Do It Again'--showing Santa
talking to a little boy while holding a note from his parents behind
his back telling him not to bring Tommy anything for Christmas
because he was naughty. Many of the illustrations are of contemporary
fashions, but there are quite a few of other subjects including a
charming depiction of a makeshift Fourth of July parade and a lovely
landscape by Birket Foster. Most of the articles concern fashions of
the day and serializations of popular novels, but occasionally there
is a piece on a different topic such as articles on Chinese barbers
and Dutch funerals. Each issue concludes with a number of
advertisements. None of the tissue sewing pattern supplements is
present, as usual. Some scuffing to the leather; hinges cracked but
very tight. Institutional bookplate on front pastedown with release
stamp. Near Fine $500.00
