[COOPER, James Fenimore]. THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS; A NARRATIVE OF
1757..... London: John Miller 1826. First English Edition
published about a month after the Philadelphia edition of the
same year. Three volumes bound in half black calf with gilt rules and
lettering and calf corners and marbled boards, a contemporary binding
certainly and likely a publisher's binding. With the half titles
present in the second and third volumes, as issued. BAL 3833; Grolier
One Hundred Influential American Books, 34: "This is the ... most
famous of the Leatherstocking Tales, and the first in which the scout
Natty Bumppo was made the symbol of all that was wise, heroic and
romantic in the lives and characters of the white men who made the
American wilderness their home.... This novel glorified for many
generations of readers, in England, France, Russia, and at home, some
aspects of American life that were unique to our cultural history";
Johnson: High Spots of American Literature, pp. 24-25; Spiller &
Blackburn 7. Modern bookplate on each front pastedown. A small jagged
tear extending from the gutter to one page in the third volume and a
shorter tear to a margin just into the text in the second volume,
each without loss. All books are tight and quite clean with only
minor foxing and staining. A little rubbing to spines and edges, but
a very nice set. $3500.00
