We are pleased to offer:

Roberson, Lewis [i.e., Lewis Robinson]. SELECT AND ORIGINAL DIALOGUES,
ORATIONS AND SINGLE PIECES, DESIGNED FOR THE USE OF SCHOOLS.
Weathersfield, VT. Published by the Author. Isaac Eddy, Printer. 1816.
180 pp. Now bound in 20th century brown cloth; black spine label. The
first few signatures somewhat misaligned with the rest. Staining and
foxing throughout, generally mild to moderate. Several short tears from
margins; loss of several letters at pages 127/128. Overall, good.
A fairly scarce volume by Lewis Robinson, whose primary lasting legacy
is as a successful Vermont-based map publisher. The introduction to the
volume provides advice to teachers who are staging school exhibitions --
admonishing them not to "overload exhibitions with music and
adventitious ornaments" for "the elocution and polite behavior of the
students are the grand points to be regarded..." While most of the
orations are obviously of American origin, the sources of the dialogues
and poetry are less clear. It is also unclear just how many of the
pieces are "select" as opposed to "original." Among the titles of the
dialogues are Lecture on Criticism, Loquacity and The Triumph of Temper.
Shaw & Shoemaker: 38820 (5 locations). McCorison: 1865. Not in
Rosenbach. [Item no. 2749.] $550.00.
