1. *O'BRIAN, Patrick. /TREASON'S HARBOUR/*. Bound in red cloth with
gilt lettering stamped to spine. Collins, London. 1983. 1st edition,
8vo, pp. 320. The dust jacket illustration is from a print entitled
"Isola di Malta". ISBN 0002221691.
The book has a slight spine slant, and the binding is slightly stressed,
as from weight being pressed down on the spine. There is a slight
blemish (white) to the bottom gutter of the front board. The foredges
are very slightly discoloured (as in incipient foxing). There are no
previous owner's markings and the text is clean and tight. Overall, the
book is in good plus, to very good, condition. The dust jacket has been
neatly price-clipped, and has a small crease to the inside front flap.
It is slightly darkened along the edges, but not chipped. The jacket is
in very good condition.
Price: $600.00.
2. *O'BRIAN, Patrick. /THREE BEAR WITNESS/*. Bound in original green
cloth with white spine lettering. Secker and Warburg, London. 1952. 1st
edition. Small 8vo, pp. 206. Dust jacket design by Roy Sanford.
The famous nautical author's first full-length novel, dealing not with
JackAubrey and His Majesty's Navy, but with Bronwen Vaughan, a Welsh
lass who raises sheep and the expectations of the men who care for her.
O'Brian had previously published one other book, "The Last Fool", a
volume of short stories. The boards show traces of spotting, and are
slightly rubbed, or soiled, along the edges of the boards. The silver
spine lettering is bright and unmarred. There is a tiny bookseller's
stamp on the extreme lower right of the front free endpaper. The
foredges are a trifle age-toned; else the book is clean, tight, and free
of former owner's markings: very good condition overall. The dust jacket
shows the original published price and has a chip across the top of the
spine. It is spotted and somewhat soiled, but nothing egregious. The top
and bottom edges show the expected rubbing, but there are no noticeable
tears. Overall, in good plus condition.
Price: $700.00.
3. *O'BRIAN, Patrick. /THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD/*. Bound in green
cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Collins, London. 1984. 1st edition,
8vo, pp. 371. Dust jacket illustration by Arthur Barbosa. ISBN 0002227118.
The book has a spine slant, and the binding is slightly stressed, as
from being opened too far, but no pages are loose, and the contents are
tight. There is a very slight tape residue (almost a shadow, really), to
the front and rear boards. The front free endpaper has been neatly
excised. The words "West Kildonan" and a seven digit number are rubber
stamped (probably by a library), in small letters, near the bottom of
the copyright page. No other markings. The text block is darkened at the
margins. Overall, the book is in good plus condition. The original dust
jacket has been price-clipped, but is otherwise clean, bright and in
very good condition.
Price: $200.00.
4. *STRANG, Herbert (ed.) Patrick O'Brian (contrib.). /THE OXFORD
ANNUAL FOR BOYS 31ST Year/*. Bound in original decorated light green
cloth (no dust jacket), with colour and b&w illustrations. Oxford
University Press, London. 1938. 1st edition. Thick 4to, pp. 192. Boards
rubbed at edges and mod. soiled. Binding sl. "squidgy", but still tight.
Ink inscription on ffep; else good condition.
Contains eighteen illustrated short stories for boys, one of which is by
R. P. Russ. Richard Patrick Russ (1914-2000) is the given name of famed
nautical writer Patrick O'Brian (the creator of the Jack Aubrey
character). O'Brian legally changed his name in 1945. Apparently, Russ
(O'Brian) only wrote four short stories under his birth name, all of
which were published in The Oxford Annual for Boys. The story in this
copy is entitled "One Arctic Summer". For O'Brian collectors, this is a
scarce item.
Price: $65.00.
Terms of sale - The price is net in USD. Payment by check or credit
card. Postage and packing charge is $7.50 for the first item, $3 for
each additional. Returnable within seven days of receipt if not as
described.
