(SCIENCE) Descartes, Rene. OPERA PHILOSOPHICA [from the half-title]. Editio
Quarta. Nunc Demum hac Editione Diligenter Recognita, & Mendis Expurgata.
Amsterdam: Danielem Elzevirium. 1664. 4to. 3 parts in 1.
(36),222;(16),248;(24),92,(4)pp. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Descartes. Illustrated throughout
with woodcuts, some full-page. Cont. vellum, somewhat soiled, with fore-edge
clasps intact. Armorial stamp at the center of both covers defaced. First title
page (and offsetting a bit on to the portrait) with an old discoloration at the
center of the page to remove the name of a previous owner, otherwise a very
nice copy. $850.00 (trade discount allowed)
This volume contains Descartes’ PRINCIPIA PHILOSOPHIAE, SPECIMINA
PHILOSOPHIAE, and his PASSIONES ANIMAE. It was published along with, but in a separate
volume, Descartes’ MEDITATIONES (with a 1663 imprint date). See Willems #1339
and #1304 for a discussion. The Elzevir 1664 edition is scarce, the reprint done
by Weyerstraeten in Amsterdam in 1664 is much more common.
