"PARKER'S EXPLORING TOUR BEYOND THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS...WITH A MAP OF OREGON
TERRITORY"
By Rev. Samuel Parker, A.M. Published by Andrus, Woodruff, & Gauntlett, 1844
First published in 1838, "Journal of an Exploring Tour Beyond the Rock
Mountains" is the journal the Reverend Samuel Parker's 1835 mission to
preach to the Indians of the Oregon Territory (Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Utah
and Washington State). Although the author's primary motivation for the
trip over the Rocky Mountains was the saving of heathen souls, his journal
is an incredibly detailed log of all aspects of the journey, with accurate
descriptions of the flora, the fauna and his encounters with the various
Indian tribes Parker attempted to convert, including the Pawnee,
Ogallallah, Flatheads, Nez Perces, Shoshones, Utaws, Cayuse, and Paloose
Indians. He also drew what is considered to be the earliest accurate map of
the Oregon Territory and a view of a basalt formation on the Columbia
River, both of which are included in the book.
After exploring the Platte River, the Black Hills, the Rocky Mountains, the
head waters of the Columbia River, Walla Walla, the Cascades and Vancouver,
Parker set sail for the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) and the Society Islands
(Tahiti) to convert their native populations. He covers the details of this
trip with the same attention he gives to his travels in the Oregon
Territory, describing "worship in the native church", a "heathen temple" a
"tea party of the royal family" and the burying place of the royal family.
And, unlike many of his white contemporaries, Parker was sympathetic
towards the Native Americans who was determined to convert:
"While we charge the Indians with inveterate ferociousness and inhuman
brutality, we forget the too numerous wrongs and outrages committed upon
them, which incite them to revenge.... When Indian offenses are proclaimed,
we hear only one side of the story, and the other will not be heard until
the last great day."
The two appendices consist of a "Vocabulary of Indian Languages" that gives
English translations of words in the Nez Perce, Klicatat, Calapooa, and
Chenook languages and a "Meteorological Table" with daily readings at 7am,
1pm and sunset. Now that's thorough.
No reserve.
