DOWNING, A. J.   RURAL ESSAYS.  EDITED, WITH A MEMOIR OF THE AUTHOR, 
BY GEORGE WILLIAM CURTIS. AND A LETTER TO HIS FRIENDS, BY FREDERIKA 
BREMER.   N. Y.: Putnam, 1853.  The scarce first edition.  Large 
octavo, original cloth stamped in gold and blind, just slight 
wear.  Geo. W. Curtis's card tipped-in, signature on title page of 
Stephen Vincent Benet (army officer, chief of ordinance, grandfather 
of the poet, who was named for
him.)  Frontispiece, extra engraved title page, 7 plates, and 
text-illustrations.  The engraved title has a view of Downing's 
library with its large bow-window.
An excellent copy of this posthumous collection by "the first great 
American landscape gardener . . . [he] made over the face of rural 
America" (DAB).
