Greetings Booklovers,

We are pleased to offer:
~
(No. 7490 ) Smith, Melbourne (prints) and Thomas C. Gillmer (text)
(Introduction by Dr. Vernon D. Tate). BRIGS AND SLOOPS OF THE AMERICAN NAVY:

WATERCRAFT COLLECTION BY MELBOURNE SMITH, VOLUME NUMBER THREE.
Annapolis: Admiralty Publishing House, Ltd., (1973). First printing, Card
covers, Oblong folio, [xviii], 10 plates, Color lithographs. Very good.
The excellence of American naval architecture in the first half of the
19th century is on display in this superb collection of color plates,
including the brigs "Oneida" (1803), "Spark" (1814), "Porpoise" (1836),
"Truxtun" (1842), the sloops "Wasp" (1806), "Boston" (1825), "Levant"
(1838), and others. Melbourne Smith's paintings are known for their historic
and structural accuracy based on extensive research and experience, and also
for their fine artistic quality. The ten 16" x 12" prints are reproduced to
the highest standards on quality paper. They are interleaved with protective
tissue guards on which historical and descriptive text regarding each vessel
is printed. Bound in stiff paper covers with cloth reinforced spine. A few
corner creases, rubs, and light stains to covers but no wear to the
lithographs inside. Original publisher's brochure and order form for framed
prints laid in. Uncommon. $100.00
