"EXPLORATION OF THE VALLEY OF THE AMAZON, Made Under the Direction of the
Navy Department."
By Wm. Lewis Herndon and Lardner Gibbon. Published by Robert Armstrong,
Public Printer in Washington in 1854.
In 1851 Navy Lieutenants Wm. Lewis Herndon and Lardner Gibbon went to Lima
to embark on an odyssey that would take them down thousands of miles of
river in canoes and last close to two years. Of course, the real purpose of
the trip was to quietly scout the Amazon basin for potential commercial
exploitation its vast natural resources. The three-volume set is
illustrated with 35 two color plates lithographed by P.S. Duval & Co.,
Philadelphia and three spectacular maps.
No reserve.
