"PARKER'S EXPLORING TOUR BEYOND THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS...WITH A MAP OF OREGON
TERRITORY"
By Rev. Samuel Parker, A.M. Published by Andrus, Woodruff, & Gauntlett, 1844
First published in 1838, "Journal of an Exploring Tour Beyond the Rock
Mountains" is the journal the Reverend Samuel Parker's 1835 mission to
preach to the Indians of the Oregon Territory (Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Utah
and Washington State). Although the author's primary motivation for the
trip over the Rocky Mountains was the saving of heathen souls, his journal
is an incredibly detailed log of all aspects of the journey, with accurate
descriptions of the flora, the fauna and his encounters with the various
Indian tribes Parker attempted to convert, including the Pawnee,
Ogallallah, Flatheads, Nez Perces, Shoshones, Utaws, Cayuse, and Paloose
Indians. He also drew what is considered to be the earliest accurate map of
the Oregon Territory and a view of a basalt formation on the Columbia
River, both of which are included in the book.
No reserve.

"Cruisings in the Cascades. A Narrative of Travel, Exploration, Amateur
Photography, Hunting and Fishing..." By G.O. Shields. Published by Rand,
McNally & Company: 1889.
By the author of "Rustlings in the Rockies", "Hunting in the Great West"
and "The Battle of the Big Hole, "Cruisings in the Cascades and Other
Hunting Adventures" is more than a collection of hunting stories. The
author tells not only of the game, but also his travels throughout the
American Northwest. He describes the 19th century cities and unspoiled
landscapes including: Tacoma, Seattle, Vancouver, B.C. ("a quaint old,
English-looking town"), Port Moody, the Cascade Mountains, Puget Sound,
English Bay, Crater Lake, Ski-ik-kul Lake, giant firs and cedars, the Rocky
Mountains, Montana and Northern Wisconsin.
As for the game, he tells of fifteen pound salmon and salmon so abundant
that ranchers fished them out of the river with pitch forks; heading off
flocks of Canvas Backs; shooting venison; trout fishing in the mountains;
hunting the grizzly bear; elk stampedes; hunting the Rocky Mountain goat
and antelope; peculiarities of the Columbia black tail deer; rounding up
wild hogs; and Buffalo hunting on the Texas plains.
No reserve.
