"Narrative of an Expedition through the Upper Mississippi to Itasca
Lake..." By Henry R. Schoolcraft, published by Harper & Brothers: 1834.

Henry Rowe Schoolcraft (1793-1864) was an important early Western traveler
and writer. An American geographer, geologist, and ethnologist, he was
noted for his early studies of Native American cultures. He eventually
married a Chippewa woman, became Superintendent of Indian Affairs in
Michigan, and authored an important 6-volume set on American Indians. He is
responsible for naming many of Michigan's counties, and giving several of
those established in 1840 faux Indian names.

"Narrative of an Expedition through the Upper Mississippi to Itasca Lake"
consists of his detailed and interesting narrative of the trip, plus maps,
including two fold-out maps titled "Sketch of the Sources of the
Mississippi River, Drawn from Lieut. Allen's observations in 1832 to
illustrate Schoolcraft's Inland Journey to Itasca Lake" and "St. Croix and
Misacoda or Burntwood Rivers". There are also two small engraved maps of
Cass and Itasca Lakes. These maps are considered to be the first accurate
maps of the Lake District around western Lake Superior.

No reserve.
