1938. Profusely illustrated. Quarto, original printed wrappers.
Covers worn, spine chipped, two leaves (pp. 33-36) torn at bottom
with some loss of text.
Inscribed on front cover in pencil: "John give marked bids to Mike...
John... with gallery as a last resort. Dave" Some prices realized
and buyers noted in pencil including Dr. R. (Rosenbach), John Kohn,
Goldsmith, Drake, G. W. (Gabriel Wells), Chiswick, Retz & Storm,
Inman, Schwartz and M. P. (Michael Papantonio).
With some pithy comments in pencil, i.e.: #117-119 Jane Eyre,
Villette and The Professor crossed out and noted "all lousy"; #138
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, crossing out the word "superb,"
underlining the auction house hyperbole "is without question the
finest copy to appear at public sale" and writing "Balls" in the
margin. $135.00

spine. Spine slightly browned at ends with minute tears, boards
slightly rubbed at corners, top edge and endpapers very lightly
foxed, else fine. One of 500 copies. David A. Randall's copy, signed.
With the bookplate of Crosby Gaige.
Traces the history of the development of bindings with emphasis on
determining the priority of issue for both the bibliographer and
collector. Carter comments on methods of dating bindings, library
bindings, jobbing and remainder publishers, and other aspects of
publisher's bindings. $375.00
HART, James D. The Popular Book. A History of America's Literary
Taste. New York: Oxford University Press, 1950. Illustrated. Octavo,
cloth, pictorial dust jacket (worn). LIghtly foxed upper edges, else
fine. First edition.
Includes an interesting bibliographical checklist and a chronological
index of books. Affixed to the front pastedown is a very interesting
TLS dated August 20, 1949 from the author to David A. Randall: "The
manuscript of America's Bookshelf arrived today with your valuable
suggestions and corrections. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate
your having saved me from some of my errors of fact and for your
kind words about the general value of the book.
I have, of course, made all the appropriate changes and have also
taken the liberty of adding a note on my indebtedness to you in the
page of acknowledgements." (The title changed to The Popular Book. A
History of America's Literary Taste, Hart did " and to Mr. David
Randall, who read the manuscript and offered many valuable
suggestions.")
Hart goes on to discuss an article about an annotated copy of Two
Years Before the Mast he is working on for publication in The
Colophon, and asking for Randall's assistance. $135.00

revised and enlarged. Inscribed by Jake Blanck to Colton Storm in
pencil: "Just for fun and for Colton Storm - Jake Blanck". Also
signed "David A. Randall, Personal" in ink. With stamp of Retz &

stained, else fine.
With three highly interesting observations by Randall in ink. One of
these relates to Somerset Maugham, the manuscript Of Human Bondage
