Narrative of the Expedition of An American Squadron to the China Seas and 
Japan, preformed in the years 1852, 1853, 1854, Under the Command of 
Commodore M.C. Perry, United States Navy, by Order of the Government of the 
United States.
Compiled from the Original Notes and Journals of Commodore Perry and his 
Officers, at His Request and Under His Supervision. By Francis L. Hawks, 
D.D. LL.D.; D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1856. (First Edition, thus, 
Two volumes bound in half leather published same year to the public. First 
data prepared in two large reports, with full scientific facts, etc.. for 
The House of Representatives and one for the Senate of the United States.
This large volume includes 12 fold out maps, each in very good condition; 77 
engraved or lithographed full page illustrations, and a profuse amount of 
text illustrations, head and end pieces. Few of the full page tissue covered 
illustrations have mild edge foxing. Frontispiece, "Prince of Idzu," 
engraving is foxed to margin. Mild random foxing to few illustrations, 3 
have mild offsetting.
Bound in 3/4 morocco, brown and blue marbled boards, e.p. and page ends. 
General light rubbing of extremities and boards. Spine decorated with gilt 
panels, black title panel with gilt lettering. Text very clean, tightly 
bound. No writing or book plates. A very good + solid copy of this 
remarkable expedition that secured a trade treaty with Japan, and provided 
America with a great historical work of Asia in the mid 1800's. In 
protective archival polyester film wraps. sm 4 to., 634 pp. $750.00 (10%
