La PEROUSE, Jean Francois Galaup de. THE VOYAGE OF LA PEROUSE

John Stockdale 1798. First Edition in English. Two octavo (4-7/8" x
8") volumes bound in contemporary polished calf rebacked with
sympathetic modern calf spines and contrasting morocco spine labels.
Hill, p.173: "A valuable contribution to the history of geographical
discovery"; Howes L-93: "First voyage of a foreigner to missionary
establishments in Upper California"; New Howes L-93; Lada-Mocarski 52;
Sabin 38962; Zamorano 49. Illustrated with 47 (of 51) engravings.
Lacking the large folding Chart of the World, the Anchorage of the
Frigates at Mowee, and the Chart of the Discoveries in the Seas of
Tartary and China, all in the first volume, and the View of St. Peter
and St. Paul at Kamchatka in the second volume. According to Sabin,
"The narrative of the enterprising but ill-fated Perouse is full of
interest in all portions, but his relations of the peculiarities he
observed in the natives of the northwest coast of North America, are
especially valuable. The mysterious fate of this distinguished
navigator has never been satisfactorily cleared up. The above account
was transmitted from Botany Bay, after leaving this place the
expedition was never heard of again." The chart of the Great Pacific
Ocean in the first volume is detached but present. Despite lacking 4
of the 51 plates, a Near Fine set. $1500.00
