Greetings Booklovers,

We are pleased to offer:
~
(No. 8671 ) [Lincoln, Abraham] Explanatory note by J[ohn]. McCan Davis.
ABRAHAM LINCOLN, HIS BOOK: A FACSIMILE REPRODUCTION OF THE ORIGINAL WITH AND
EXPLANATORY NOTE BY J. MCCAN DAVIS.
New York: McClure, Phillips & Co., 1903. Second printing, Suede over card
covers, Thirty-twomo, Not paginated, Facsimiles. Fine in very good folder
and slipcase.
This is a replica of the only book produced by Abraham Lincoln. Hoping
to strengthen the Republican party in 1858, Lincoln had convinced Captain
James N. Brown to run for the Illinois legislature while Lincoln himself ran
against Stephen Douglas for the U.S. Senate. Captain Brown met with trouble
right away because Douglas and the Democrats had falsely but effectively
portrayed Lincoln and the Republicans as favoring full "Negro equality,"
which was abhorrent to many in Illinois who otherwise were sympathetic to
the Republican cause. This scrapbook, prepared specifically for Brown, was
Lincoln's intended antidote to these charges and it represents the clearest
expression of Lincoln's views on race--at least as they were in 1858. There
are 41 pages in facsimile containing clipped extracts from Lincoln's
speeches, his handwritten explanatory notes, and an 8 page manuscript letter
to Captain Brown. Also reproduced here is the "scare-head" printed
frequently in the pro-Douglas Illinois State Register prior to the election.
The title page and McCan's notes follow the facsimile portion of the book,
as do numerous blank leaves in faithful reproduction of the original.
MONAGHAN #1337. Bound in suede over stiff card covers with light blue
staining to textblock edges. There are a few scattered spots of foxing
inside. The little book is housed in its original pasteboard folder, which
in turn is housed in the original slipcase. Folder and slipcase have rubs to
edges, minor splitting at ends of folder joints. $75.00
