Halliwell, James Orchard. A DICTIONARY OF ARCHAIC AND PROVINCIAL WORDS,
OBSOLETE PHRASES, PROVERBS, AND ANCIENT CUSTOMS, FROM THE FOURTEENTH CENTURY.

London; Gibbings and Company: 1901. 5th edition.

A fascinating and invaluable dictionary of some 50,000 words and phrases
which had fallen out of use between 1400 and 1900. There is much material
here for the cultural historian and antiquarian- a "bee hive", for
instance, was a wattled straw chair used by cottagers; "flacket" was to
"flap about", from whence a "flacketing wench" was a woman whose clothing
hung loosely; "pouder-marchant" were pulverized spices; and a "tisty-tosty"
was a bouquet of cowslips tied together with a ribbon and tossed back and
forth as a game. I think if you oss to pother around in these books you'll
collaud the day you bought them, but if you think I'm just being a gabby,
don't go all flegge and take your spittle staff to me.

2 volumes. Hardcover. 6"x9", xxxvi + 960 pages; Publisher's original maroon
boards with black cloth spines, gilt titles; light soil, a little wear;
marginal stain to the last pages of Vol. 2; a nice set overall. [08792] $175.00
