HOLMES, Oliver Wendell, Jr. AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (ALS).
Washington, D.C.: 7 Jan. 1930. A fine one-page letter of @75 words on
United States Supreme Court 4-7/8" x 7-3/4" stationery to William
Preble Jones, Chief Probation Officer, District Court of Somerville,
Massachusetts. Holmes thanks Jones for a pamphlet and talks about the
memories it brought, briefly quoting from Wordsworth's "The Solitary
Reaper": "I recall old, unhappy, far-off things and battles long ago
and also the old Dept. of Boston, which it is always moving to
remember-- I cannot tell you about the Wendell Phillips connection.
It was through the mother(?), but I cannot put my hand on a book
about the mother's(?) genealogy that might explain it." Holmes was
appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1902 by President Theodore
Roosevelt, a position he held until his retirement in 1932. Holmes
became famous for his liberal interpretations of the U.S.
Constitution and was known as the "Great Dissenter" because of his
disagreement with the views of his colleagues on the Court. His
lectures on common law at the Lowell Institute in Boston, collected
as THE COMMON LAW (1881), are considered a classic of legal writing.
Together with the original envelope with the Supreme Court of the
United States printed return address also filled out in Holmes's
hand. Vertical crease from mailing, otherwise Fine and very
frameable. $1500.00
