/*THE ENCYCLOPAEDIA BRITANNICA*/ /A Dictionary of Arts, Sciences,
Literature and General Information. Eleventh Edition./ Twenty-nine
volumes, uniformly bound in moss green coloured suede, a.e.g. With maps,
colored and b&w illustrations. Published by Cambridge University Press,
Cambridge, UK. 1910-1911. 11th edition - the "thin paper edition",
printed on "onionskin" paper, /complete with the custom-crafted mahogany
tiered standing bookcase/.
This, the most famous of all encyclopedias in the English language, was
sponsored by a "Society of Gentlemen in Scotland", (/Printing and the
Mind of Man/) and was first published in three volumes in 1771. This is
perhaps the most desirable edition of this encyclopedia and was the last
to contain original signed, extensive articles treating the major areas
of human knowledge and endeavour. "It is noteworthy for its index which
has justly been described as the best index of any work of reference".
(P&TMOM). Each of the 29 volumes in this complete set measures
approximately 11 1/2" x 9", and each contains perhaps 1,000 pages
which, being printed on onionskin paper, result in a thickness per
volume hardly exceeding one inch. Each is bound in moss green coloured
suede with silk-sewn endpapers of supple (and sensual) calf. All volumes
are stamped in gilt with the title, edition number, and volume
designation, as well as the crest of the University Press at Cambridge.
The 29 volumes come are displayed in a customer-made solid mahogany
tiered bookcase which measures 51" high by 15" wide and 11" deep. The
bookcase is in excellent condition (see photos).
The condition of the binding of the individual volumes varies from fair
to very good. As might be expected, the first volume is in the poorest
condition, with the front joint split completely (board detached but
present) and the rear joint partially split. Similarly, the final
volume, containing the Index (which is nearly three times the thickness
of the other volumes, as the text is not printed on onionskin paper), is
splitting at the joints, and torn across the bottom of the spine, but
otherwise intact. The edges, or spines, of the suede covers on volumes 2
to 4, 6 to 8, 13, 14, 16, and 21 to 25, all show some rubbing.
Internally, each and every volume is in excellent condition, with no
former owner's markings, or interlineations.
