PRAED, WINTHROP MACKWORTH. LILLIAN: A FAIRY TALE. London:Printed
for Chas. Knight, Pall Mall East, 1823. First edition. Disbound,
[4], 25 pages. (His first separate publication in English; previous
to this he had edited and contributed to "The Etoninan" and published
2 poems in Latin: "Carmen Graecum Numismate . . ." &
"Epigrammata Numismate." This copy lacks the advts, as did Tinker's
copy. The poet's "Advertisement", explaining the origin of the poem,
appears on p. [3]: "At a small party at Cambridge some malicious
Belles endeavoured to confound their sonnettering friends, by setting
unintelligible and inexplicable subjects for the exercise of their
poetic talents," this mock-Arthurian epic being the answer to one such riddle.
A youthful jeu d'esprit in which one can here and there anticipate
the older poet.) $195.00
