"THE SCHOOL FOR SCANDAL" by Richard Brinsley Sheridan. Published in Oxford
by the Shakespeare Head Press in 1930, in an edition limited to 475 copies
on hand-made paper. A beautiful fine press edition on hand-made paper by
the Shakespeare Head Press, edited by R. Crompton Rhodes, with
illustrations and decorations by Thomas Lowinsky.
THE PRESS: The Shakespeare Head Press was founded in 1904 by Elizabethan
scholar A.H. Bullen, to produce fine-press editions of Shakespeare. After
Bullen's death in 1927 the press was bought by a partnership who hired
Bernard Newdigate as typographer, and the press worked in the William
Morris Arts & Crafts tradition.
THE AUTHOR: Richard Brinsley Sheridan [1751-1816] was a Dublin-born
lawyer-turned-playwright whose works included "The Rivals", and "School for
Scandal". In 1780 he quit the theatre and went into politics, eventually
serving as a minister under William Pitt, and becoming an outspoken
supporter of the French Revolution.
THE ILLUSTRATOR: India-born Thomas Lowinsky was a popular artist and book
illustrator who had a knack for blending his illustrations to the text. He
illustrated books for the Nonesuch Press, the Curwen Press, the Shakespeare
Head Press, and many others, and his art is in the collection of the Tate
Gallery.
