ELIOT, T. S. SELECTED ESSAYS (Louis Untermeyer's copy with a TYPED
LETTER SIGNED from Eliot). New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company
(1932). First Edition. Gallup A21c. Provenance: Louis Untermeyer
(letter from Eliot, note on flyleaf). LOUIS UNTERMEYER'S COPY OF THE
FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, WITH A TYPED LETTER SIGNED (TLS) FROM ELIOT
dated 15 February 1933: "...I am afraid I can't help with Knopf's
Chapbook series... I simply have no poem whatever which I care to
have published in this way at present." Eliot also refers to an apple
which he hoped Untermeyer enjoyed, adding "you would have been
welcome to one apiece." Evidently a less risky fruit than the peach.
Housed in a handsome, custom quarter morocco clamshell box. The
letter is inserted into an envelope tipped to the front endpaper. A
newspaper clipping of a John Crowe Ransom review of an Eliot book is
tipped to the front pastedown. The spine is faded. Very Good, lacking
the dustwrapper but in a Near Fine case. $1500.00
