“Acts Passed at the 1st (2nd and 3rd) Session of the 5th Congress of the
United States of America: Begun and Held at the City of Philadelphia, in
the State of Pennsylvania.”

Published by Authority, printed by William Ross, Philadelphia: 1797

This volume includes the texts of Acts passed at all three sessions of the
5th Congress of the United States in the year 1797. And a busy and
important year it was, with the establishment of the Navy Department and
the Marine Corps, the Post office and Postmaster General.

The last section consists of the text of “The Constitution of the United
States of America; as proposed by the convention, held at Philadelphia,
September 17, 1787”, as well as twelve proposed amendments, ten of which
would become ratified as the Bill of Rights.

Also included are:

-“An act authorizing the President of the United States to raise a
Provisional Army.”

-“An act to regulate trade and intercourse with the Indian tribes, and to
preserve peace on the frontier.”

- The Alien and Sedition Acts

- An act establishing a frontier boundary line “over which settlers shall
not cross”.

- An act "to cause the frigates United States, Constitution and
Constellation to be manned and employed".

- The establishment of government in the Mississippi Territory and “an act
for an amicable settlement of limits with the State of Georgia the
establishment of the borders of Georgia”.

- A “Treaty of Peace and Friendship between the United States of America
and the Bey and Subjects of Tripoli of Barbary” and “Articles of a Treaty
between the United States of America and the Cherokee Indians”, complete
with a list of Cherokee signatories.
