*FLEMING, Ian. /CASINO ROYALE/*. Bound in original black cloth with red
heart blocked to front board and red spine lettering. Jonathan Cape,
London, 1953. 1st edition, small 8vo, pp. 218. The first "James Bond"
novel and the author's first book. This copy has been in a private
collection for over fifty years, and has never before been offered for
sale.

With the original dust jacket, showing the original price. The jacket
is chipped across the edges, with some wear and rubbing at the folds.
The rear panel (showing a sketch of the author, done in 1943, in the
famous "Room 39" of the British Naval Intelligence Division) is a bit
soiled. The front flap of the jacket had previously been stuck down to
the front pastedown. The rear endpapers were also marked and soiled. Our
conservator lifted the front flap without steaming or chemicals.
However, there was, as a result, some thinning to the paper on the
inside of the flap. Japan paper was inlaid to the thin areas to
strengthen the flap. When the flap is viewed from the front there is a
shadow visible where the thinning occurred, and there are some small
brown areas on the inside of the flap where some glue residue remains.
Small closed tears along the edges have also been strengthened with
japan paper. Our conservator also managed to locate clean vintage
endpapers exactly matching the tone and texture of the original
endpapers, and our binder has replaced the rear endpapers and the front
pastedown. The front free endpaper is original. It is now difficult to
discern that the endpapers have been replaced. Indeed, when one opens
the book and views the new front pastedown and the original front free
endpaper, side-by-side, it is almost impossible to tell which is new and
which is original. There is some very light soiling to the lower left of
the rear board. The front board is fine, save for some slight rounding
of the corners. There is a small spot of foxing (about the size of a
pencil eraser head) covering the page number "5" (at the bottom of page
5), which has off-set to the facing page. The title page is very clean
and bright. The binding is also very slightly sprung, noticeable only
because several of the later gatherings are a bit stressed at the
gutter. However, nothing is loose. The text block is a bit soiled at the
bottom edge. The fore edge and top edge are clean. Scans of all points
of the book and jacket have been taken, and may be sent upon request.
