"Relics of Antiquity, Exhibited in the Ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum,
with an Account of the Destruction and Recovery of those Celebrated
Cities"

By Sara Atkins Wilson. Published in New York by W.B. Gilley in 1826. The
first American, after the first London, edition.

This book was “compiled from authentic sources and intended for the use of
young persons”, but it makes interesting reading for anyone today. The
author first recounts the calamity of the eruption and burying of the
cities, and then spends most of the book taking the reader on a tour of
the excavated ruins which were just at that time enjoying a popular vogue
among tourists. She has some nasty words about the Italian authorities,
and is much more pointed and opinionated than many travel writers today,
which makes for entertaining reading.

This is a hardcover, measuring 4.5”x7”. It has ix + 143 pages, plus 5
copper-engraved plates with two illustrations on each one. There is also a
woodcut on the title page. It is MISSING the frontispiece illustration.
The book is bound in the original pictorial boards, though the covers are
now soiled and scuffed. It has an old leather spine. The pages also have
some browning and foxing.
