Some science and some psuedo-science...

Burland, C.A. "THE ARTS OF THE ALCHEMISTS" New York; The Macmillan
Company: 1967. "In this scholarly and lively survey of the work of
alchemists through the centuries, C.A. Burland brilliantly unravels the
strange mixture of psychology, philosophy, mysticism, and chemistry which
makes up the alchemical arts. Although alchemists have often been derided
as charlatans, this account reveals that many of them, from ancient Egypt
to our own days, have engaged in a serious and dedicated search for the
inner meaning of the whole material universe". Hardcover. 7.5"x10", 224
pages, 8 color, 130 b/w illustrations, dj; light wear, but a nice copy.
[05312]  $30.00

"FRENCH SCIENCE AND THOUGHT" New York; Herbert Reichner: Catalog 4: no
date (early 1960s). A scholarly and extensively annotated catalog from
this knowledgeable bookseller. Softcover. 6”x9”, 112 pages, 440 items,

Hawkes, Nigel. "EARLY SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENTS" New York; Abbeville
Publishers: 1981. ”Nigel Hawkes’ lively chronicle of the scientific
frontier will enthrall the armchair inventor, the science buff, (and) the
compulsive tinkerer
“. Seventy-three scientific instruments from the
16th-19th centuries are illustrated in beautiful color plates and fully
described. Hardcover. 9”x11.5”, 164 pages, packed with color
illustrations; dj; light wear, a little soil, sunned around the edges and
with some color loss along the front flap of the jacket. [05768] $65.00

Turner, Gerard L'E. "NINETEENTH-CENTURY SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENTS" London /
Berkeley; Sotheby Publications / University of California Press: 1983.
Nineteenth century scientific instruments are still largely available in
the marketplace at prices still affordable to most collectors. In this
major work, the Dean of experts on scientific instruments takes on the
wild, sometimes wacky world of Victorian and Regency science. Turner
includes chapters on Time; Weights & Measures; Mechanics; Hydrostatics;
Pneumatics; Heat; Sound; Light; Magnetism; Electricity; Chemistry;
Meteorology; Surveying & Navigation; Drawing & Calculating; and
Recreational Science. Hardcover. 9"x11", 320 pages, hundreds of b/w and
some color illustrations, dj; a very near in a very lightly soiled jacket;
bookplate.  [04729] $150.00

Walsh, James J. "THE POPES AND SCIENCE. The History of the Papal
Relations to Science during the Middle Ages and down to our time" New
York; Fordham University Press:1915. 4th Revised Edition. The author (a
physician) sets out to show that the long-standing belief that the Popes
have been hostile to science is, in fact, a misunderstanding of the
historical record. He found in his own researches that "the Popes were as
liberal patrons of science as of art...". Hardcover. 6.5"x10", xiv + 527
pages, b/w illustrations. Some cover soil, spine faded, moderate internal
browning.  $25.00
