Copenhagen Medical Society for 1818. The Society was founded in 1772 and

through the Massachusetts Legislature" Boston; printed for the author by
Wright & Potter: 1923. The history of three bills (two were passed)

other medical professionals, to get them passed. Hardcover. 6.5"x9.5", 205
pages, b/w plates; light cover soil and a little wear, a little light
internal soil, and a ding/tear that extends through a few pages in the

long, thin tube with optical ability. There are many color illustrations

Mez-Mangold, Lydia. "A History of Drugs" Basle; F. Hoffmann-La Roche &
Co., Ltd.: 1971. A well illustrated history of the development of drugs
from ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt through the Middle Ages and Renaissance
and the 19th century, sponsored by the giant Swiss drug maker. This is not
an exhaustive scholarly treatise, but rather a well illustrated overview.

Squibb, Edward R. "Proposed Legislation on the Adulteration of Food and
Medicine" New York; G.P. Putnam's Sons: 1879. "Rough draft of a proposed
law to prevent the adulteration of food and medicine, and to create a
state board of health, with explanations and illustrations of the
principal points of the law. Reprinted from 'The Transactions of the
Medical Society of the State of New York' for 1879. Notes in reply to
criticisms by the press. The British 'Sales of Food and Drugs Act of
1875' with notices of some rulings of the British court". Dr. Edward R.
Squibb was a Navy physician who left the service in 1858 to found his own
laboratory. In 1877 he helped save the "United States Pharmacopoeia", the
standard guide to drug standards in the United States. In 1879 he gave the
speech this essay is based on, calling for national food and drug
standards. Ten days afterwards federal legislation was filed, but it
languished in Congress for many decades, a victim to the "states vs.
federal government" squabbles. Squibbs' laboratory, meanwhile, became E.R.
Squibb & Sons in 1892, and continues today as Bristol-Myers Squibb, the
third largest pharmaceutical company in the United States. Hardcover.
5.25"x7.5", 57 pages; an ex-library copy in library covers of plaid boards
and cloth tape; title page embossed, clear taped and with several notes,
but the rest of the text is clean. [05475] $125.00

[Wyeth] "Medicinal Fluid Extracts Manufactured by John Wyeth & Brother,
with Doses, Remedial Attributes, and Formulae for Extemporaneous
Preparations" Philadelphia: 1892. A fascinating catalog of medicinal
extracts offered to druggists and physicians, with complete descriptions
of ingredients, instructions for use, and dosages. Syrup of Musk Root,
Tincture of Dwarf Elder, Hemlock bark, Infusion of Henbane, Tincture of
Indian Hemp... Probably not more than 50% of these are considered either
harmful or illegal these days. An introductory page notes that many other
manufacturers use poor methods to gather and process the plants used to
produce these extracts, resulting in inferior compounds. John Wyeth &
Brother was founded in 1860 and continues today as Wyeth Pharmaceuticals,
a multi-national pharmaceutical company. OCLC locates 8 copies of this
edition. Hardcover. 5”x8”, 259 pages; original green pebbled cloth with
gilt cover title. Covers with some wear and soil; printed on poor quality
paper, the pages are browned and very brittle; the title page is splitting
away from the binding for about ¾ of its length and has a short closed
tear. [07105] $200.00

the Philadelphia Museum of Art by Smith Kline & French Laboratories"
Philadelphia Museum of Art: 1959. A selection of antique prints touching
on many aspects of medicine, doctors, hospitals, etc. Softcover. 7”x10”,
