ANNAN, Thomas. THE OLD COUNTRY HOUSES OF THE OLD Glasgow GENTRY. ILLUSTRATED BY PERMANENT PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANNAN. Glasgow:James Maclehose, 1878. Second edition, revised and enlarged. Limited edition of 225 copies. Thick quarto (approximately 10 x 12-1/2 inches) in dark green cloth backed in red morocco. Titles and illustrations of a great country house in gilt on spine and front cover. Covers with beveled edges; top edge gilt. Illustrated with 100 mounted photos of historic houses located in the environs of Glasgow. Thomas Annan (1829-1887), a noted Scottish photographer, worked with photogravure, calotype, and albumen prints (with which he illustrated the first edition of this title). This 2nd edition used a new carbon print technology to create a more stable, permanent photographic image with a rich and delicate tonal range. Corners bumped and spine a bit rubbed; occasional light foxing, otherwise a very nice copy of this scarce title. (Gernsheim 504).  $2500
