Harrington, Richard. Carpenter, Edmund, ed. PADLEI DIARY, 1950. AN
ACCOUNT OF THE PADLEIMIUT ESKIMO IN THE KEEWATIN DISTRICT WEST OF THE

PHOTOGRAPHED BY RICHARD HARRINGTON. n.p. Rock Foundation, 2000. 109

Richard Harrington (1911-2005) was a Canadian photojournalist who
undertook five epic dogsled trips through the Canadian Arctic between
1948 and 1952, documenting both a vanishing way of life as well as
creating haunting portraits of a people on the brink of starvation.
The diary notation for Feb 11. reads: "The people didn't get many
caribou around here... By now, that's frightening. Dogs are dying
everywhere. Remaining dogs: skin & bones, shivering; listless ...
(The people) cannot move around anymore." First published in the
magazine of Royal Canadian Geographical Society in 1952, these
photographs alerted Canadians to the horror unfolding in Keewatin.
Edward Steichen used one of the photos -of Keenaq and her son
Keepseeyuk- in his Family of Man exhibit in 1955. Carpenter has
excerpted about 3000 words from the 25000 word diary, Padlei Trip,
January-April 1950, which still remains unpublished. Scarce. A fine
copy in a fine silver dust jacket but for a hint of scuffing on the
rear panel. Without the slipcase. [28276] $350.00
