Davis, Walter Gee. "CAMBRIDGE FIFTY YEARS A CITY, 1846-1896. An Account
of the Celebration of the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Incorporation of the
City of Cambridge, Massachusetts" Cambridge; Printed at the Riverside
Press: 1897. With many illustrations of the parade, floats, marchers,
etc.; also Cambridge City Hall decked out in red, white and blue bunting
for the occasion. Text of remarks by John Fiske, William A. Bancroft,
Charles W. Elliot, Josiah Quincy, and many others. Hardcover. 6.5”x10”,
191 pages, plus many b/w plates; original green cloth, gilt spine title;
very minor soil, a little wear, endpapers partially browned, but overall a
very clean, tight, nice copy.

"THE RINDGE GIFTS TO THE CITY OF CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS"  Cambridge;
published by Order of the City Council: 1891. In the late 1880s Frederick
H. Rindge (1857-1905), whose father, Samuel Baker Rindge, had made a
fortune as a merchant and businessman in Cambridge, gave the city three
buildings- the Library, a Manual Training School, and the magnificent City
Hall in Central Square. Rindge, who had grown up in Cambridge, attended
Harvard for several years and then moved to California, but he visited the
city once a year and felt deeply attached to the idea of giving it
something back. In the case of the Library, Rindge not only gave the
building, he gave the land as well, and he funded the Manual Training
School for a dozen years after it was established (it survives to this day
as part of Cambridge Rindge and Latin School). This volume details the
history of the gifts and describes the buildings (all handsome stone
structures designed after the style of H.H. Richardson) as well as the
festivities at their dedications. Hardcover. 5.25”x7.75”, iv, 76 [iii]
pages, 6 b/w plates with tissue guards; original green cloth with gilt
titles and gilt cover device; light soil, a little wear, but overall a
very nice, tight, bright copy.

Gilman, Arthur A.M. (ed.). "THE CAMBRIDGE OF EIGHTEEN HUNDRED AND NINETY
SIX. A Picture of the City and its industries fifty years after its
incorporation, done by divers hands" Cambridge; Printed at the Riverside
Press: 1896. This celebratory survey begins with an essay by John Fiske
on “The Beginnings of Cambridge”, and continues with other chapters on
aspects Cambridge history and life including material by Thomas Wentworth
Higginson, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Horace Scudder (editor of the Atlantic
Monthly) and many others. It also includes a wealth of material on
Harvard and Radcliffe; the Cambridge presses- the Riverside Press, Harvard
University Press, and the Athenaeum Press; and Cambridge manufactures
including candy, soap, furniture, machinery, the New York Biscuit Company,
Cambridge Gas Light Co., and dozens more. Hardcover. 6.5”x10”, xx + 424
pages, b/w plates; red cloth binding; light wear, a little soil, but a
very nice copy.
