Second Edition, Revised and Improved from the first edition of 1795-96. Two
volumes, Quarto, 9 x 11 inches, contemporary binding of patterned paper
over boards with leather (sheep) spines, title labels on spine panels. 760
pp + 18 full page copper engravings at rear, 628 pp. + 23 full page plates,
with numerous cuts and diagrams throughout the text.
Charles Hutton (1737-1823), British Philosopher and Mathematician, Member
of the Royal Society, author of works on mathematics and physics. His
Philosophical and Mathematical Dictionary has long been considered a
valuable contribution to scientific biography up to the late 18th Century.
The full-page plates at the rear depict Hot Air-Ballons, Air-Guns,
Anemometers, Barometers, Ballistics, Canals, Domes, Compasses, Dials,
Diving Bells, Fire Engines, Electrical machines, Fountains, Telescopes,
Hydraulic pumps, Hydrometers, Magic Squares, Microscopes, Planetary orbits,
Planetariums, Quadrants, Steam Engines, Spheres, Telegraphs, The Solar
System, Thermometers, Windmills, Etc, Etc, Etc.
Corners bumped at edges, some minor staining to leather spines and title
labels somewhat defective (that of Volume 1 missing, and volume 2 somewhat
chipped). With the ownership stamps of the Societe De Lecture De Geneve on
the title pages, and their small neat number labels at the base of spines.
Some marginalia in pen to a few leaves. The text is complete, as are the
plates, 48 full-page copper plates as issued. Overall, a very good
set.
