Definitive account of the transformation of navigation from empirical
mariner's art to fundamental science. Detailed treatment of the development
of astronomy, mathematics and hydrography as well as advances in ship
design, piloting, channel-marking, and much more. A large, rich, and well
researched volume which carries the story up to 1640. Much information on
how the early colonists reached America and how they plied their subsequent
overseas trade. Excellent bibliography, many interesting chart
reproductions. See ALBION, p. 80. Bound in dark blue cloth over boards with
gilt lettering and blind-stamped compass rose on spine. Slight extremity
rubs, some soiling to bottom edge of textblock. Light foxing to first few
leaves. Hinges sound. Jacket has fading to spine and top edge of front panel
along with edge wear consisting of rubs, wrinkles, and shallow chips.
