Greetings Booklovers,

We are pleased to offer:
~
(No. 5801 ) Middleton, Arthur Pierce edited by George Carrington Mason.
TOBACCO COAST: A MARITIME HISTORY OF CHESAPEAKE BAY IN THE COLONIAL ERA
(INSCRIBED AND SIGNED).
Newport News: Mariner's Museum, 1953. First printing, Full cloth, Octavo,
xiv, 482 pages, black & white illustrations, maps. Very good in a very good
dust jacket, Jacket in Mylar protector.
This classic economic history of the Chesapeake Bay region also
includes a wealth of information on everyday colonial life. The monumental
themes developed in this work have powerfully influenced subsequent study
and interpretation of the Chesapeake Bay region and the colonies that shared
its shores. See PRATT, EASTERN SHORE #459. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by Middleton
on front free endpaper. Additionally laid in (and in its original mailing
envelope) is a typed letter, signed, on Middleton's letterhead. The 1978
letter is addressed to the prior owner of this book (which she had
apparently not yet obtained) and discusses the difficulty of locating copies
of "Tobacco Coast." He reports that it sometimes can be found in second hand
bookshops, and that a friend "
had seen it priced at $50, which I find a
little hard to believe." Bound in brown cloth over boards with gilt-stamped
spine and upper board. Mild bumps to fore corners of upper board, shallow
bumps to cloth at spine ends. Jacket has a touch of sun-fading to spine,
some minor edge wear, and a few short edge tears which a prior owner has
neatly taped from the back. A better than usual copy of this essential book
with a related letter from the author laid in. $100.00
