A faithful facsimile, down to the scratches on the covers, of part of Padre Sebastiano Resta’s collection of drawings compiled in Resta Codices I and II and housed in the Biblioteca Ambrosiana, Milan. Resta was a major Settecento collector of Old Master drawings. Reproduced here are 225 pages of the Resta Codices, with 100 of these drawings by Leonardo, Raphael, Botticelli, Tintoretto, Bernini, and many others along with accompanying text. Resta entitled his codices the “Galleria Portatile” (Portable Gallery), and the book truly is like a museum. Some drawings are on hinges with text and further drawings behind, others are tipped in. Resta’s accompanying text includes annotations, genealogies, and bits and pieces of gossip about the artists. Tissue guards contain modern annotations in four languages. [10] pages with parallel introductory text in Italian, German, French, and English precede the facsimile pages.

This is a solid book, weighing 22 pounds.
