We offer the following

GILLRAY, JAMES. The so-called "suppressed" plate volume from the 1851
Bohn edition of Gillray's works, printed from the original plates
(with reworking). Imperial folio. Half brown morocco over marbled
boards, spine richly gilt, edges gilt, extremities worn, binding
separated at front hinge (an easy restoration), but the leather
joints, while rubbed, are sound. There is some chipping at head and
tail. 45 plates on 23 leaves, complete. Internally quite a fresh
copy, no water-staining or other defects, bar a little finger-soil.

These plates, considered for one reason or not improper in 1851, were
not included in the two volumes of Gillray's works published by Bohn.
It's unclear to me if all sets included this plate volume; I suspect
that it was an optional extra. In any case, a high proportion of
extant sets now lack it.

Though the Humphrey printings of the engravings are far superior, in
the past few years they have also become exceptionally uncommon, and
the Bohn edition has become far more desirable and is frequently
broken for the plates. By their controversial nature, the plates in
this volume are sought-after and are among Gillray's most famous
images. This is a perfect opportunity for someone to complete their set.

$2200, less discount.
