The scarce first edition of Brerewood’s commentary on the first four books of
Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics. Edward Brerewood (1565-1613), an antiquary
and mathematician, graduated from Brasenose College, Oxford in 1590, and later
became professor of astronomy at Gresham College, London (1596). A diligent and
retiring scholar, Brerewood published nothing in his lifetime; that task was
left to his nephew Robert, who inherited his uncle’s manuscripts along with
his vast library. He was assisted by Thomas Sixesmith, a fellow of Brasenose
College, who published the present work. STC 3627; Madan, OXFORD BOOKS (1640) #2.
