RICHARDSON, SARAH J. ("AN ESCAPED NUN."] LIFE IN THE GREY NUNNERY
AT MONTREAL. AN AUTHENTIC NARRATIVE OF THE HORRORS, MYSTERIES, AND
CRUELTIES OF CONVENT LIFE. Boston: Damrell & Moore, Printers,
1858. The rare first edition of this work which has been often
reprinted. Octavo, original cloth decorated in blind & lettered in
gilt. A well-preserved copy. End paper foxed, old name, &c, on
prelims, light stain at top of the margin of the first few pages.
Frontispiece-portrait. Of this rare link in the chain of
anti-Catholic publications in the mid-19th Century (sometimes
referred to as "The Protestant Crusade") OCLC cites only 2 copies -
Trinity College & Ga. State Univ. RLG cites a copy at Huntington,
although "Boston" is accompanied in the description with a question
mark for some reason. Miss RIchardson was born in 1835, which would
make her about 23 at the time of publication. She was a native of
St.John's, New Brunswick, Canada. $350.00 (Trade Discount, 10 %.)
