Redier, Antoine. "JEANNE DE FRANCE"

Le Puy Editions Xavier Mappus: 1946.
One of 425 numbered examples on meme velin blanc paper.

A biography of St. Jeanne de Valois, Jean of the Annunciation,
long-suffering daughter of Louis XI and wife of Louis XII. Born in 1464 of
Louis XI's second wife, Charlotte of Savoy, she was despised by her father
both because she was a girl and because she was deformed and sickly.
Raised at a remote chateaux, she was eventually betrothed to Louis, Duke
of Orleans, the King's second cousin and heir, in a political match. Louis
did not like her any more, or treat her any better, than her father had,
and when he became king he received an annulment on the grounds of lack of
consent and consummation. Jeanne was made Duchess of Berry and devoted her
life to good works, founding the Order of the Annunciation. In fact, it
was her humility and forgiveness that marked her life and won her a
devoted following; in 1505, on her deathbed, she was still praying for the
souls of her father and husband. She was never actually canonized, though
she is universally known as "Saint Joan".

Softcover. 6.5"x9", 459+ pages, 4 b/w plates, many illustrations in the
text; nicely decorated covers; light wear, but a very nice copy of an
elegant book. [5615] $30.00
