¶ The first edition of "Paradise Lost" was published in "ten books" in 1667, the printer/publisher then being Samuel Simmons, but the copyright soon passed to the Tonsons. "Paradise Regained" and "Samson Agonistes" were first published (together) in 1671. The second edition of "Paradise Lost" appeared in 1674 ("revised and augmented", in which the poem was first divided into twelve books). In 1688, Tonson published in folio, and by subscription, a sumptuous illustrated (4th) edition of the three titles. Our copy is the sixth edition of the text, and the second illustrated edition. It is "Printed by Tho. Hodgkin, for Jacob Tonson, at the Judge's-Head near the Inner-Temple Gate, in Fleet Street." "Paradise Regain'd" is "Printed by R. E. and are to be sold by John Whitlock near Stationer's-Hall." MDCCXV (but this date is clearly a misprint). London. "Samsom Agonistes, A Dramatick Poem." is "Printed by R. E. are to be sold by John Whitlock near Stationers-Hall" MDCXCV. London. This edition of "Paradise Lost" contains a preface entitled "The Verse", the "Explanatory Notes upon each Book, and a Table to the Poem, never before Printed" and twelve full-page copper engravings by Michael Burghers and Peter Paul Bouche after designs by John Baptist Medina. See ESTC R180605. DNB p. 486. The boards of our copy have separated (but are present). The spine is scuffed. Some plates are shaved, affecting plate numbering at top. Some marginal foxing. Stitching of the text block is tight. This copy priced with a suitable re-binding in mind.
