HOPKINS, Gerard Manley. BRIDGES, Robert (editor). POEMS OF GERARD
MANLEY HOPKINS NOW FIRST PUBLISHED. London: Humphrey Milford (1918).
First Edition. Edited with notes by Poet Laureate Robert Bridges.
Original cloth-backed blue boards with printed paper spine label.
First edition of Hopkins's first book, which consisted of 750 copies.
Illustrated with two photogravure portraits by Emery Walker and
manuscript facsimiles. An interesting association copy of this
important and valuable book INSCRIBED and SIGNED on the front
endpaper in the hand of John Masefield to the mother of poet Rupert
Brooke from Masefield and his wife: "For Mrs Brooke,/from Constance +
John Masefield--/June. 1924." Occasional light foxing to contents and
some to the blue boards; spine label rubbed but most lettering still
intact. In 1930 Masefield succeeded Robert Bridges as Poet Laureate
of England. A significant association copy linking, among other
things, two of the greatest Georgian poets. Very Good, lacking the
scarce dustwrapper. $6500.00
